Capacity: 7 servings or 12

The original SLUSHi has an 88 oz vessel with a 64 oz maximum liquid fill, which Ninja rates at 7+ servings. That covers a family movie night or a small get-together.

The MAX nearly doubles that with a 150 oz vessel and a 112 oz maximum fill, rated at 12+ servings. If you regularly serve a crowd, you will refill it far less often.

Speed and smart features

Ninja says the MAX freezes drinks about twice as fast as the FS301. It also adds SlushAssist, which senses the ingredients and adjusts the temperature automatically, plus 15 temperature settings instead of a simple thicker-or-thinner control.

The original takes roughly 15 to 60 minutes per batch depending on ingredients and starting temperature. Starting with chilled liquid helps either machine.

Frozen cocktails

Both machines have a program for spiked slush. Ninja says the MAX can handle higher-alcohol recipes than the FS301, because alcohol makes a mix harder to freeze. If frozen margaritas are the main reason you are buying, that is a real advantage for the MAX.

With either model, drinks still need sugar or a recommended sugar substitute to slush properly.

Size and storage

The MAX weighs about 32 pounds, compared with 24 pounds for the original, and it takes up more counter space. If you plan to store the machine in a cupboard between uses, the smaller FS301 is much easier to live with.

Our verdict

For most households, the original Ninja SLUSHi is enough: it makes the same smooth slush, keeps it frozen for hours and is easier to store. The SLUSHi MAX is worth it if you host large groups, make frozen cocktails often, or want faster batches with automatic temperature control.

Is the Ninja SLUSHi MAX worth the upgrade?

If you regularly serve more than 6 or 7 people or make a lot of frozen cocktails, yes. For occasional family use, the original SLUSHi is the better value.

Do both need sugar to work?

Can I make alcoholic drinks in the original SLUSHi?

Yes, it has a Spiked Slush program. The MAX supports recipes with more alcohol.

How long do drinks stay frozen?

Both keep drinks at serving temperature for up to 12 hours.
