How we chose

  • We started from the smart holiday lights and outdoor plugs that sell in the largest numbers on Amazon in October 2026, and checked every listing on October 14, 2026 for the current model, stock and seller.
  • We compared what decides the purchase: indoor or outdoor rating, which assistants and apps work, music sync, length and power use.
  • Specs come from the Amazon listings and makers' descriptions. We have not lab-tested these lights ourselves, and we say where a product falls short.

The best smart Christmas lights for 2026

Best overall

Best overall: Govee Christmas Lights 2

App-controlled string lights on a green wire where every LED has its own chip, so colors and animations can run along the string. Version 2 adds white LEDs for a cleaner warm white.

Why it made the list: Govee is the best-selling smart lighting brand on Amazon, and this string covers everything: warm white for a classic look, color effects for parties, shape mapping for trees, and Alexa, Google and Matter for voice and schedules.

  • RGBWIC: color plus dedicated white LEDs, each LED individually controlled
  • 130+ preset animated scenes, DIY effects and AI-generated scenes in the Govee Home app
  • Shape mapping: the app learns where the LEDs sit, so effects flow around a tree or along a railing
  • Alexa, Google Assistant and Matter; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • IP65 lights for indoor and outdoor use (keep the adapter dry); about 15 W for the 66 ft length, per the listing
  • Lengths: 66 ft (200 LEDs), 99 ft (300 LEDs), 164 ft and 328 ft; strings cannot be joined end to end

Pros: beautiful whites and colors, mapping, works with every major assistant, low power use.

Cons: strings cannot be connected in series, so plan lengths before you buy; app has a learning curve.

Skip it if you only want plain warm white on a timer; a smart plug on your current lights is cheaper.

Longer roofline or big tree? The 99 ft (300 LED) version is the better size for most porches and 7.5 ft trees.

Best budget

Best budget: Dazzle Bright Smart Christmas String Lights (98 ft, 300 LEDs)

A long, affordable color-changing string with a 44-key remote and a Bluetooth app, sold by the brand on Amazon.

Why it made the list: It is one of the top-selling smart Christmas lights on Amazon: 98 feet of color for a fraction of what premium strings cost, with music sync and timers.

  • 16 million colors and multiple scenes; 98 ft lit length plus a 13 ft lead wire
  • Built-in microphone for music sync
  • Bluetooth app (group control, DIY scenes, timers) plus a 44-key remote
  • UL certified, low-voltage power, IP44 water resistance for indoor and outdoor use

Pros: lots of light for the money, remote included, music mode.

Cons: Bluetooth only: no Alexa or Google voice control and no control away from home; colors are not individually addressable like Govee or Twinkly.

Skip it if you want voice control or schedules you can change from work; pair it with an outdoor smart plug, or choose Govee.

5-minute setup tip: Pair the app before you hang the string, and test the remote on the porch: Bluetooth range through a wall is short.

Best for light-show mapping

Best for light-show mapping: Twinkly Strings 600 (157.5 ft)

Premium mappable lights: you point your phone's camera at the display, and the Twinkly app learns where every LED is, then draws effects across the real shape.

Why it made the list: For people who want a true light show, Twinkly's mapping and FX tools are the most precise, and multiple Twinkly sets can sync into one big display.

  • 600 RGB LEDs on 157.5 ft of green wire; 16 million colors
  • Camera mapping and the FX Wizard for custom effects
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; works with Alexa and Google Assistant (the listing also names Apple Home)
  • IP44; about 36 W per the listing
  • Sync several Twinkly sets; music sync with Twinkly Music (sold separately)

Pros: best mapping and effects, very long single string, syncs across sets.

Cons: premium cost; music sync needs an extra accessory; sold by a third-party store and shipped by Amazon.

Skip it if you just want pretty colors on a tree; Govee does most of this for less.

Best for windows

Best for windows: Govee Smart Curtain Lights Pro

A curtain of 960 RGBIC LEDs (about 5.4 × 5.7 ft) that hangs in a window or on a wall and plays animations, GIFs and text like a low-resolution screen.

  • 960 RGBIC LEDs; 250+ preset modes and 10 music modes
  • Upload your own GIFs and images; 1,000+ design assets
  • Matter, Alexa and Google Assistant

  • Combine up to 3 sets for a 16.2 × 5.77 ft display

Pros: eye-catching, endless designs, strong weather rating, Matter.

Cons: covers one window per set; needs a nearby outlet.

Skip it if you want lights along a roofline or tree.

Best for the tree (classic look)

Best for the tree (classic look): Govee Christmas Sparkle String Lights (99 ft)

Indoor tree lights with 375 milky-white bullet-shaped LEDs that look like classic mini lights, but every LED can change color.

  • RGBWIC color with adjustable white temperature
  • 140+ scene modes and 3D shape mapping

Best year-round upgrade

Best year-round upgrade: Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 (100 ft)

RGBIC lights that mount once under the roof edge with adhesive, clips or screws and stay up all year.

Why it made the list: One installation covers Christmas, Halloween, the Fourth of July and game days, and you never climb the ladder in December again.

  • 100 ft, 16 million colors, 100 scene modes and AI-generated effects
  • IP67 lights, IP65 control box and adapter; rated for freezing winters
  • Mounting kit included (VHB adhesive, clips, screws)
  • Alexa and Google Assistant; schedules and timers in the Govee Home app
  • Cannot be cut; not compatible with the first-generation Govee permanent lights

Pros: install once, use all year, strong weather ratings, schedules.

Cons: bigger installation job; cannot be cut to length, so measure first.

Skip it if you rent, or your HOA restricts permanent exterior lighting.

The best outdoor smart plugs for Christmas lights

A smart plug is the bridge between ordinary lights and a schedule. Outdoors, always use a plug rated for outdoor use, and check that its load rating covers everything plugged into it. For indoor trees, any smart plug works; see our full smart plug guide.

Best outdoor smart plug

Best outdoor smart plug: Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug EP40 (2 outlets)

A weather-resistant plug with two outlets you control separately, the simplest way to make any lights “smart.”

What a season of Christmas lights costs to run

Modern LED strings use very little power. The 66 ft Govee Christmas Lights 2 lists about 15 W, and the 600-LED Twinkly string about 36 W. An old-style incandescent C9 string with 25 bulbs at 7 W each draws about 175 W, more than ten times as much. Try your own numbers:

Season electricity cost calculator

Find the watts on the light's power adapter or listing. The rate defaults to about 18 cents per kWh, the U.S. average residential price EIA expects for 2026; use the rate on your own bill for a better answer.

Season total: 4.1 kWh, about $0.74.

Buying guide and safe setup

A safe outdoor setup for smart Christmas lights A house wall with a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet under a cover. An outdoor-rated smart plug is plugged in, the light string's power adapter hangs off the ground with a drip loop in the cord, and the lights run along the roofline. Labels say not to run cords through closed doors or windows and to keep connections out of puddles and snow. A safe outdoor setup: GFCI-protected outlet, outdoor-rated smart plug, a drip loop in the cord, and the adapter kept off the ground. Based on ESFI's outdoor decorating safety tips.

1. Indoor or outdoor rating

Check the IP rating on the listing. IP44 resists splashes; IP65 and IP67 handle rain better. Tree-only lights like the Govee Sparkle string are not water resistant. Power adapters are usually less protected than the lights themselves, so keep them dry and off the ground.

2. Which assistant and app

Wi-Fi lights work with voice assistants and from anywhere; Bluetooth-only lights work near your phone. For Apple Home, look for Matter.

3. Length and power

Measure the roofline or estimate tree lights at about 100 LEDs per foot of tree height for a full look (fewer for a minimalist style). Many smart strings cannot be joined end to end, so buy the right length the first time.

4. Wi-Fi at the porch

Smart plugs and Wi-Fi lights need a 2.4 GHz signal outdoors. Test it with your phone at the outlet. If it drops, see our best mesh Wi-Fi systems.

5. Safety basics

  • Use lights, extension cords and plugs marked for outdoor use, and match each cord's rating to what is plugged in.
  • Plug outdoor decorations into GFCI-protected outlets (or a portable outdoor GFCI).
  • Do not pinch cords in doors or windows, and keep them clear of snow and standing water.
  • Inspect strings for damage before hanging them, and turn decorations off when you leave home or go to sleep; a schedule does this for you.

FAQ

Are smart Christmas lights worth it?

If you enjoy changing colors and effects, yes: one string covers warm white, multicolor and animated looks, and you control everything from your phone. If you only want lights on and off at set times, a smart plug on your current LED lights is cheaper and does that job well.

Can I make regular Christmas lights smart?

Yes. Plug them into a smart plug (an outdoor-rated one outside) and set a schedule, such as on at sunset and off at 11 p.m. You can also turn them on and off by voice with Alexa or Google Assistant.

Do smart Christmas lights work with Alexa and Apple Home?

Most Wi-Fi smart lights work with Alexa and Google Assistant. Apple Home needs Matter or HomeKit support: Govee Christmas Lights 2 and Govee Curtain Lights Pro list Matter. Bluetooth-only lights, like the Dazzle Bright string, work only in their own app.

How much does it cost to run Christmas lights for a month?

Multiply watts by hours per day by days, divide by 1,000 for kWh, and multiply by your electricity rate. A 15 W LED string running 6 hours a night for 30 nights uses 2.7 kWh, about 50 cents at 18 cents per kWh. An old incandescent C9 string with 25 bulbs at 7 W each (175 W) would use about 31.5 kWh, roughly 5.70 dollars.

Can smart Christmas lights stay outside in rain and snow?

Only if the lights are rated for outdoor use; check the IP rating (IP44 resists splashing, IP65 and IP67 resist rain better). Keep power adapters and connections off the ground, out of puddles and snow, and plug into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet.

Do smart lights need Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi lights need a 2.4 GHz signal where they are installed to work with voice assistants and from away from home. Bluetooth lights work without Wi-Fi but only within a short range of your phone. If your Wi-Fi does not reach the porch, a mesh system fixes that.

Is it safe to leave Christmas lights on all night?

Safety groups like ESFI recommend turning decorations off when you leave home or go to sleep. A smart plug or a light schedule makes this automatic.
