Clearly Filtered, Brita Elite and ZeroWater are three of the most searched-for water filter pitchers in the US, and they take very different approaches. Clearly Filtered promises the longest list of contaminants, including fluoride. Brita Elite has the strongest set of official certifications for lead, PFAS and microplastics. ZeroWater strips out almost everything dissolved in your water and gives you a meter to prove it.
All three hold about 10 cups. The real differences are what each filter is certified for, how long it lasts, and what it does to the taste of your water. Here is how they compare.
Quick Answer
- Choose Clearly Filtered if you want the widest coverage, including fluoride and arsenic, and you are comfortable relying on the brand's independent lab results for most of those claims.
- Choose Brita Elite if you want officially certified reduction of lead, PFOA/PFOS and microplastics, the longest filter life and the easiest everyday pitcher.
- Choose ZeroWater if your tap water tastes of minerals or chlorine and you want the cleanest, most neutral taste, and you accept shorter filter life in hard water.

Certified vs Lab-Tested: The Difference That Matters
This is the most important thing to understand before you buy. "NSF certified" means an independent body has tested the filter against a specific standard and keeps checking it. Standard 42 covers taste and odor (like chlorine), Standard 53 covers health contaminants like lead and PFOA/PFOS, and Standard 401 covers emerging contaminants such as microplastics and some pharmaceuticals.
Brita Elite is certified under all three. Its data sheet lists 99.5% or more lead reduction, 98.1% PFOA/PFOS reduction and 99.6% microplastics reduction. ZeroWater says its 5-stage filter is the only pour-through filter NSF certified to reduce lead, chromium and PFOA/PFOS.
Clearly Filtered is certified to Standards 42 and 372 (chlorine taste and odor, and lead-free materials). Its much longer list, 386+ contaminants including lead, PFAS, fluoride and arsenic, comes from testing by EPA-accredited third-party labs, with results published on its website. That is real, transparent data, but it is not the same as certification for those contaminants. If official certification is your priority, Brita Elite or ZeroWater is the safer choice.
Fluoride: Only One Pitcher Claims It
If you specifically want to reduce fluoride, Clearly Filtered is the only one of the three that claims it. Brita Elite does not reduce fluoride, and ZeroWater does not list it on its Amazon listing. Whether you want fluoride removed is a personal choice; many US cities add it to tap water on purpose for dental health.
Taste and Minerals
ZeroWater works differently from the other two. Its ion-exchange filter removes about 99% of total dissolved solids (TDS), which includes minerals like calcium and magnesium. The result is very neutral, "empty" tasting water, and the TDS meter in the box should read close to zero. Some people love it; others find it flat.
Brita Elite and Clearly Filtered leave minerals in, so the water tastes closer to good tap water without the chlorine.
Filter Life and Running Costs
Brita Elite lasts the longest: up to 120 gallons, or about 6 months for an average family. A Clearly Filtered filter is rated for up to 100 gallons, about 4 months of daily use, and replacement filters are sold on Amazon.
ZeroWater filters wear out faster, and how fast depends on your water. ZeroWater estimates 40+ gallons when your tap water TDS is low (2 to 50), but only about 8 to 15 gallons when it is very hard (301 to 400). You replace the filter when the meter reads 006 or higher, or if the water starts tasting fishy or sour. In hard-water areas, that can mean a new filter every few weeks.
Know your water first. Your water utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report listing what is in your tap water. Check it before you choose: if lead or PFAS is the concern, pick a pitcher certified for it; if your water is very hard, ZeroWater will cost more to run.
Who Should Skip Each One
- Skip Clearly Filtered if you want every claim backed by official certification, or if you are impatient: some buyers mention that it filters slowly.
- Skip Brita Elite if fluoride reduction is important to you, or if you want the lowest possible dissolved solids.
- Skip ZeroWater if your water is very hard, or if you prefer water that still has minerals in it.
Our Verdict
For most households, Brita Elite is the sensible default: officially certified for lead, PFOA/PFOS and microplastics, long filter life and easy to live with. Choose Clearly Filtered if you want the broadest protection, including fluoride and arsenic, and value its published lab data. Choose ZeroWater if taste is your main complaint and your water is not too hard.

FAQ
Which pitcher removes the most contaminants?
Clearly Filtered claims the longest list, 386+ contaminants, based on independent lab testing. Brita Elite has the broadest official NSF certification of the three, covering lead, PFOA/PFOS and microplastics.
Does Brita Elite remove fluoride?
No. If you want to reduce fluoride, Clearly Filtered is the only one of these three that claims it.
Is ZeroWater water bad for you because it removes minerals?
No. Most minerals come from food, not drinking water. Some people simply prefer the taste of water with minerals in it.
Which filter lasts longest?
Brita Elite, at up to 120 gallons (about 6 months). Clearly Filtered lasts up to 100 gallons, and ZeroWater from about 8 to 40+ gallons depending on how hard your water is.
Is Clearly Filtered NSF certified?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 372, for chlorine taste and odor and lead-free materials. Its claims for lead, PFAS, fluoride and other contaminants come from independent lab testing rather than NSF certification.
